Carnival Girl in Red - Cannonball Fire
Wherever you find a few people gathering together in Trinidad and Tobago, you have a party. It's Carnival!! Carnival is in our soul, in the way we move, in our music.
,
Carnival comes from the Latin "carne vale" - or farewell to the flesh. It's the period before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. It's about excess - getting it out of your system before the deprivation of Lent starts. In Trinidad and Tobago, Carnival is officially the two days before Ash Wednesday - starting at approximately 4am on Monday morning. (Sometimes 2 am, sometimes 6 am) But unofficially Carnival starts in - or even before - October of the year before, when the masquerade bands (mas bands) launch their presentations for the season; the music for the season is launched on the radio stations; the gyms are full with people getting in shape for their skimpy (or not) costumes, and the parties start to build up to the big day. We take a brief break to celebrate Divali, Christmas and Eid, and then, in January, plunge full tilt into the breakneck pace of carnival preparation.

Soon, we'll show you the intense preparation that's going on all over Trinidad - in the mas camps where costumes are being made, the recording studios, the gyms, and everywhere else. We're working hard to bring the beauty and excitement of Trinidad Carnival and culture to you!

Plymouth Jazz 2007

Featured Events | Plymouth Jazz Festival

Just heard talk about the Jazz 2007 edition. After the brilliant performances by Sting et al this year, I've been informed that we will be enjoying Earth, Wind and Fire, Mary J Blige and Sir Elton John next year, with a possibility of Celine Dion. What a line up. The discussion also brought up the notion that, at least for Trinidadians, St. Lucia will lose out - why whip out a passport to go to St. Lucia when we can get just as good a show right here at home.
We'll keep you updated on the Festival as we get more info. In the meantime, check out the photos from 2005 and 2006 in the Photo Gall
